The newly developed mechanical movement Cal.0200 is a next-generation movement that achieves a high level of aesthetic quality by leveraging the technology and expertise of Manufacture La Joux-Perret S.A. (La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), a subsidiary. It was born from the fusion of Japanese and Swiss watchmaking cultures. The classical mechanism of center two hands with a small second reflects the developer’s strong desire to express a beautiful gear train that adheres to the origins of the watch. The design and assembly are carried out by CITIZEN, while the exterior decoration utilizes the advanced and diverse decorative techniques possessed by La Joux-Perret to the fullest. This is how the development of this movement began.

We struggled and deliberated over how to balance the classical display style of center two hands with small second and CITIZEN’s image of innovation. As a result, the developer’s philosophy of “adhering to the origins of the watch” was also carried over to the exterior, leading to a design concept of “forms that intuitively convey the precision of the exterior.” The shape does not aim for eccentricity but instead thoroughly eliminates unnecessary lines for a refined form.

More than just a reissue

At first glance, the case without lugs may evoke quartz watches from the 1970s, but it is by no means a reissue of a past design. This result was reached by pursuing the same theme as back then: symbolizing CITIZEN’s spirit of innovation and challenge. In other words, in visually expressing the high precision of time, we followed a similar thought process as the designers of that era.

The integrated case and bracelet, crafted with highly precise cutting, combine polished and hairline finishes. The vivid reflections and shadows that convey the hardness of the stainless steel give an impression akin to viewing a high-definition image. Compared to the 1970s model (right), the integration and sharp finish of the connection between the case and band (red frame) offer a design approach distinct from a reissue.

The Importance of Visual Effect

I believe that for wristwatches, it’s not the actual dimensions but “how it looks and feels” that matters. For example, by adjusting the angles of the upper and lower slopes on the case side and setting the width of the rising surface narrower, the watch appears thinner than its actual size. The sense of unity between the case outline and the band outline was repeatedly simulated and checked in 3D modeling to ensure beauty when viewed at an angle, as it would appear when worn. Working on this model, I was once again reminded of the importance of actually seeing the fine balance of shape and texture with one’s own eyes.

By changing the angles of the upper and lower slopes on the case side and narrowing the width of the rising surface [A], the case appears thinner despite having the same dimensions. In addition, by adding a polished slope to the tip of the case [B], the sense of unity with the band’s slope [C] is enhanced.

Dial Expression

I believe the dial design is the key element of a watch, as it is the component most frequently seen. Therefore, I carefully examined how to incorporate the tension of the form, which visually conveys the precision of the exterior, into the dial. The indexes and printing were repeatedly considered in terms of length, width, and size, aiming for a layout that evokes the high precision of a meter. The base dial surface features a pattern inspired by natural beauty, fusing the accidental beauty of nature with the controlled, artificial beauty of the case and band, creating a pleasant contrast.

Indicating the Time

We made sure that the repeated act of “reading the time” would not cause any stress. The finish of the hour and minute hands features a V-shaped polished section to emphasize sharpness, while the flat section has a hairline finish to suppress blackout from mirror reflection, ensuring the tips are readable from any angle. The hand for the small second, which serves as a “symbol,” is set thin and long, and its movement evokes a sense of “life marking the passage of time.”

Sustained Satisfaction

undefined

I believe that the reason mechanical watches are felt to satisfy not only practicality but also self-expression and the desire for recognition is because their jewel-like beauty adorns the wrist, giving a sense of superiority, and the affection that arises from the machine, composed of many parts, moving in response to the wearer’s motion, like a companion. The sense of weighty appearance, the natural comfort and balance on the wrist—our aim was to create “the finest for everyday life” with a timeless and ageless design that sustains the satisfaction felt when worn and allows for new discoveries of satisfaction.

The Essential Role of a Watch

A watch, as its name suggests, is an instrument that marks the passage of time. This model focuses on how to make that time as easy to read and as beautiful as possible. Not only are the shapes and finishes of the hands and indexes, and the large, highly legible date display carefully considered, but the case and bezel are also composed of multiple surfaces that are skillfully combined. This results in a beautiful finish from any angle, thanks to the way they reflect light. In the case of a three-hand layout, which can often appear monotonous, the power reserve indicator positioned at 10 o'clock adds a distinctive touch and expresses individuality. The symbolic emblem on the case back provides a sense of satisfaction to the wearer, while the case size and the way the lugs are shaped ensure a comfortable fit on the wrist. The design fulfills the essential role of a watch worthy of the name The CITIZEN. Elegant and refined, this is a timepiece exuding luxury.

CITIZEN Standard

Aiming to create a watch suitable for the new ideas and lifestyles of the 21st century, the first model of The CITIZEN was launched in 1995 with the concept of "living together." Equipped with a highly accurate movement with an annual deviation of ±5 seconds, it also features comprehensive after-sales service, including a 10-year free warranty, long-term repair support, and a dedicated consultation desk. This model is a symbol of CITIZEN's watchmaking philosophy. The simple form, unaffected by trends, and the refined design that fits any scene or style—both hallmarks of The CITIZEN—are expressed in the distortion-free polished surfaces and fine hairline finishes of the case. The shape and size of the lugs, designed based on data analysis, are optimized for Japanese wrists. For superior legibility, features such as anti-reflective glass coating and thoughtful design of the hands, indexes, and dial ensure the watch is easy to read from any angle. Additionally, with a low-metal allergy specification, this is a CITIZEN watch that is gentle on the wearer. This is a model worthy of bearing the name The CITIZEN, created in pursuit of the true essence of a watch.

Simplicity through subtraction.

Series 8 originally debuted in 2008 as a collection. Its distinctive feature was an innovative 8-part case structure for the time, based on an urban and modern concept. The collection was temporarily discontinued in 2014, but in 2021, eight years later, the new Series 8 was relaunched. Simple and modern. Simplicity through subtraction. While inheriting the design concept known as the 'aesthetic of subtraction,' the brand has restarted as a mechanical watch that combines the specifications and presence demanded today.

Feeling Nature

Since I have been involved with CITIZEN L since its launch in 2016, we have undertaken various initiatives from a sustainable perspective. Recently, with the increase in remote work and people seeking a more relaxed lifestyle, I felt the need to create something that fits the new lifestyle of women. Then, when I was thinking about the next new creation, I came across the word 'biomimicry.'
